My husband, Barry, and I have traveled the world looking for a place to have a second home. I grew up in Boca Raton, Florida, and we have lived there for the past twenty years. I remember Boca Raton as a small friendly town with one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Boca Raton, unfortunately, has outgrown us. It still has the beautiful beach, but it has become a good size city and has lost any small town charm. 

Barry and I began our search for a small Southern town where people still had manners in earnest 3 years ago. Europe was too expensive, Asia too far from Florida  where our children live, Central America and Mexico are too hot and full of expats. We tried Quito for a summer and didn't like the city noise, and somehow ended up in Cotacachi the following summer. After one week in Cotacachi, we purchased land and began planning our second home. Our home is complete and we live in it part of the year until we can retire.  

We had several reasons for selecting Cotacachi. First of all, intuitively we knew it was where we were meant to be. Next, we love the climate- coming from the heat of south Florida we enjoy the cool climate. Cost was a factor- we could easily build a custom designed home and as school teachers afford to pay cash for it. Cost of living here is much lower than in Florida. Health care is state of the art and affordable. There is an international expat community of people who want a healthy ,calm, and pleasant life. Finally, and of most importance, it is a place where we can make a difference. Our goal is to give back to the world, and here we have found many opportunities.  

We are happy here in Cotacachi in the Andes. We have found our small Southern town where people still have manners; we just never imagined it would be so far south.
